Abstract:

Anyone who has seen the early morning feeding at sea on a calm day has also witnessed the superiority of the warm-blooded physiology over the cold-blooded way of life. Sardines, sprats, anchovies, and other schooling fry, chased relentlessly from below by faster, larger fish such as jacks, turn the surface into a boiling kettle, while seabirds, like dive bombers, take their share of the feast. The warmer the blood, the higher the efficiency of the living thermodynamic machine.
