Abstract:

A biography of the Jewish literary critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki, born in 1920 in Włocławek, Poland. In 1930 the family moved to Berlin. In 1938 Reich-Ranicki's matriculation application at the Friedrich-Wilhelms University was declined, and in October he was arrested and expelled to Poland. After the Nazi occupation he and his wife were interned in the Warsaw ghetto, where he served as head of the correspondence and translation office of the Judenrat. His sister and her husband had managed to emigrate to Great Britain, his parents were deported and murdered in Treblinka in 1942, and his brother Alexander perished in the Poniatowa labor camp in November 1943. Reich-Ranicki and his wife escaped from the ghetto in 1943 and went into hiding in Warsaw. After the liberation they joined the Polish army and became members of the communist party. In 1948-49 he served as the Polish consul in London. Later he became a well-known literary critic in Germany.
