Abstract:

Personal, business, and family papers of Matthew Ridley, 1754-1881, of Maryland and France, a merchant and agent in Europe for the state of Maryland during the Revolution. Personal papers include two letterbooks of retained copies of outgoing correspondence, Sept 1776-June 1778 and May-Aug 1782, discussing politics and trade during the Revolution; correspondence with his first and second wives, Nancy Richardson Ridley and Catherine Livingston Ridley; correspondence with his mother and sister, Frances Huttson and Jane Huttson Sears; correspondence with Robert Morris discussing the education of their sons; and correspondence with John Jay (including sixteen typescripts) regarding French and Dutch reactions to the Revolution.

Ridley's business papers, 1773-89, include two account books, 1771-75 and 1776-77; correspondence and accounts with Mark Pringle, John Hunt, William Russell, Thomas Peters, John Holker, and other merchants, 1773-89; and records concerning Ridley's estate, 1789-1804.

Family papers include letters received by Nancy Richardson Ridley; letters received by Catherine Livingston Ridley from various correspondents including siblings Margaret Livingston, Henry Brockholst Livingston, Susanna Livingston Symmes, and brother-in-law John Jay, Robert and Mary White Morris, and Gouverneur Morris, 1770s-1812; letters received by daughter Susan Anne Livingston Ridley Sedgwick from her aunt, Susanna Livingston Symmes, 1802-36; letters received by son Essex Sherbourne Ridley; and a daybook kept by Essex, Nov 1795-Nov 1796.

Collection also includes ship accounts for Captain Archibald Kennedy including HMS Centaur, 1754-57; various Livingston family papers, 1760-1820; and a manuscript copy of a grammar text, Jan 1800.
