Abstract:

The collection consists of manuscript music and printed sheet music of noted African-American musicians collected by Maud Cuney-Hare from 1900-1936. Among the composers represented are Eubie Blake, Harry T. Burleigh, S. Coleridge-Taylor, Will Marion Cook, R. Nathaniel Dett, W.C. Handy, Maud Cuney-Hare, J. Rosamond Johnson, and William Grant Still. The collection also contains musical arrangements with lyrics by Countee Cullen, Langston Hughes, and James Weldon Johnson. Types of music represented in the collection include spirituals, gospel and religious music, blues, folk and minstrel songs, and pieces arranged for banjos.
