" ... Maurice Gee ... grew up in Henderson and was educated at Avondale College and Auckland University. His first short story was published in 1955 in Kiwi, the Auckland University literary magazine; by this time he was teaching, but his career as a teacher was shortlived, and he left teaching to become a writer. In 1962 his first novel was published, and he won the Literary Fund's Scholarship in Letters; in 1964 he won the Burns Fellowship, and was able to finish his second novel. He becamne a librarian, writing part-time, mostly short stories. ... Another novel, In My Father's Den, was published in 1972; his ... short-story collection, A Glorious Morning, Comrade, appeared in 1975. After this he began to write full-time, and in the last ten years completed the ... Plumb trilogy ... Six children's books have also appeared during that time, and [he] has also written for television. His Collected Stories was published in 1986"--Back cover.
