Abstract:

The collection consists of Merritt Clark's correspondence and research notes about the American engraver John Warner Barber, and material by Barber that Clark had collected. Series I contains correspondence between Clark and Carroll Alton Means, Barrows Mussey, Ray Nash, and Vincent Starrett, plus Clark's autograph manuscript checklist of Barber's work, three portrait prints of Barber, and a folder of other ephemera and notes. Nash's folder contains a set of proof prints that he made in the early 1950s from Barber woodblocks lent to him by Clark.

Series II contains Clark's collection of works by John Warner Barber. Present are three pieces of correspondence: an autograph letter, signed, from Barber to D. C. Pickering regarding David Humphreys; an autograph postcard, signed, from Henry Howe to Barber; and an autograph letter, signed, from Samuel G. Goodrich to Barber ordering cuts of classical subjects. Examples of Barber's work include an engraved business card; an engraved reward of merit; and an autograph book kept by Robert Robertson (Yale 1833) containing six colored maps and views of New Haven by Barber and a reengraving of the Battle of Lexington by Amos Doolittle and Barber. Other publications include four blank books with printed paper covers featuring Barber engravings: one filled with manuscript penmanship exercises and three with autograph manuscript Bible study notes by Mary Deming Perkins of New Haven. Also present are four copper plates that Barber engraved with views of New Haven and Yale College, and a black and white glass transparency with an image by Barber of the New Haven green.
