Abstract:

Ancestry, culture, and family: This study examines my upbringing as a first generation Mexican-American growing up in a working class Mexican community in Brownsville, Texas. Through the use of autobiographical writing and art, I describe the influences my family and immediate environments have had on my identity, art and teaching. I explore, by means of my artwork, how my ideas, interests, and characteristics have evolved and arrived at their current point. I transfer and develop a personal project, which establishes a historical context for my family and our cultural distinctiveness. This project also invites students to discover or reflect on their identity, culture, and personal interests.
