Abstract:

Adler examines Pulitzer plays prize-winning not primarily for insights into America's social and cultural history, but for what they reveal about the nature of American drama. He groups them under 10 themes: images of women, illusions/delusions, the ethic of happiness, war, race, politics, "the American dream," religion, the idea of progress, art and artists. This approach permits drawing relationships among plays separated by time, alluding to works that did not win the award, and following recurrent motifs. Adler analyzes individual plays in brief interpretive essays, focusing on the themes and theatrical techniques. ISBN 0-911198-84-9: $17.50.
