Abstract:

Presents a history of the evolution and construction of the Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas (Bemorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe) inaugurated in Berlin in May 2005. The controversial memorial was opened after 17 years of debate on its design and construction. Contends that the project's design, by Peter Eisenman, which won the competitions of 1994 and of 1997-98, was by far not the best. The monument is devoid of meaning and content, inauthentic, and inadequate for the event which it claims to memorialize. Moreover, it does not instruct, it cannot teach; e.g. not a word is mentioned about the fact that it was Germany that was responsible for the murder of the six million Jews. The abstract grey stelae protruding at the site remain without a title, a sign, or a dedication. Generally, the monument is misused; e.g. it is used by children as a playground. Argues that the campaign for the memorial during the 1990s became merely a vehicle for personal gain and promotion, by both individuals and corporate bodies (e.g. Degussa).
