Abstract:

Memoirs of a Jew who was born in 1927 in Budapest to the Rosenberg family, the oldest of three girls, and grew up in a nearby village. Pp. 22-41 relate Reisman's survival during the Holocaust. When the Germans entered Hungary in 1944, her father was sent to the front, while she was deported to Auschwitz with her mother and sisters. The others were gassed upon arrival, but Reisman was put to slave labor. After a few weeks she too was selected for the gas chamber, but was rescued by a member of the Sonderkommando. She was then sent with a group of women to work at a secret airport in Frankfurt a.M. With the approach of the Allies, she was evacuated to Dresden and treated for scarlet fever at a Red Cross camp. After the liberation she made her way back to Hungary, but then decided to fulfill her father's dream and emigrate to Palestine. In 1960 she left Israel for Australia. Later she discovered that her father had survived the war and died in the town of his birth in Hungary in 1948.
