Abstract:

AUTOUR DES DEUX THEMES DE LA MORT ET DU DOUBLE, LIES L'UN A L'AUTRE PAR UNE COMMUNE REFERENCE A L'EGYPTE, LIEU PRIVILEGIE OU CE LIVRE, LE PREMIER SIGNE MICHEL BUTOR, A EN PARTIE ETE ECRIT, IL APPARAIT A L'ANALYSE QUE CE LIVRE EST DOTE D'UNE ORGANISATION TOUT D'ABORD INSOUPCONNEE. EN CE SENS ON PEUT DIRE QUE L'AUTEUR A SU TIRER LES LECONS D'OEUVRES AUSSI NOVATRICES QUE CELLES D'UN JAMES JOYCE EN PARTICULIER. MAIS LA PLUS GRANDE NOUVEAUTE OFFERTE PAR PASSAGE DE MILAN RESIDE PEUT-ETRE PLUS ENCORE DANS SA TENTATIVE DE MISE EN RELATION DE DOMAINES TENUS D'ORDINAIRE SOIGNEUSEMENT SEPARES, ET NOTAMMENT, LA LITTERATURE ET LA PEINTURE. SEPARATION QUI REFLETE CELLE PLUS PROFONDE, SANS DOUTE, PUISQU'INSTALLEE AU COEUR MEME DE NOTRE SOCIETE, ENTRE LE MONDE DES VIVANTS ET CELUI DES MORTS, ET QUI ICI, PAR L'INTERMEDIAIRE DE L'ART EGYPTIEN ANCIEN, EST JUSTEMENT REMISE EN QUESTION. DES LORS C'EST LA SITUATION DE L'ECRIVAIN LUI-MEME QUI SE TROUVE ECLAIRCIE, TANT PAR RAPPORT A SON OEUVRE : "COMME SI J'ETAIS DEJA MORT", QUE PAR RAPPORT AU MONDE DONT IL EST UN DES ACTEURS : "CHERCHANT A VOIR CE QUI SE PASSE DANS LES ENDROITS OU J'AI VECU".

THIS BOOK, MICHEL BUTOR'S FIRST WORK, DEALS WITH THE TWO THEMES OF DEATH AND THE DOUBLE, WHICH ARE LINKED BY A COMMON REFERENCE TO EGYPT, WHERE IT WAS PARTLY WRITTEN. AN ANALYSIS OF THE BOOK REVEALS AN INVISIBLE STRUCTURE WHICH SHOWS THE INFLUENCE OF INNOVATING WRITERS, JAMES JOYCE PARTICULARLY. BUT THE MAIN NOVELTY OF "PASSAGE DE MILAN" LIES IN THE ATTEMPT TO CONNECT FIELDS THAT ARE USUALLY SEPARATED, SUCH AS LITERATURE AND PAINTING. IT REFLECTS ANOTHER FORM OF SEPARATION, A DEEPLY ROOTED ONE IN OUR SOCIETY, BETWEEN THE WORLDS OF THE LIVING AND THE DEAD ; BUT IN THIS BOOK PRECISELY, ANCIENT EGYPTIAN ART LEADS TO A QUESTIONING OF THAT NOTION OF SEPARATION. FROM THEN ON, IT IS THE SITUATION OF THE WRITER HIMSELF WHICH IS ELUCIDATED, WITH REGARD TO BOTH HIS WORK : "AS IF I WAS DEAD ALREADY", AND TO THE WORLD WHERE HE IS ONE ACTOR AMONG MANY OTHERS : "TRYING TO SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE PLACES WHERE I HAVE LIVED".
