Abstract:

Television documentary about the Musisches Gymnasium Frankfurt am Main, a music boarding school founded by the Nazis in 1939, where the most talented boys of the German Reich would be educated to become elite musicians. Includes interviews in which the men discuss the school, and events related to the school’s relocation after the facility was bombed. The headmaster, Kurt Thomas, already a successful choral director in Berlin, was brought in to lead the school, where he balanced artistic freedom against political doctrine. Using an abundance of archival documents the movie presents a complex picture of a chapter in the cultural history of the third Reich.
