Abstract:

Reconstructs the murder of the Jews in Jedwabne on 7 July 1941 based on interviews with residents of Jedwabne who remember the events, their children, and persons who lived in Jedwabne during the war but later left the village. Bikont also spoke with a few Jewish survivors of the massacre or with their children, in the USA and Israel. Most of the inhabitants of the village today were not willing to discuss the massacre; the few who were willing stressed the strong influence of the Endecja Party at the time, as well as of an antisemitic priest in the village. The regional Catholic press had warned people about the "Jewish danger". There are still people who rememeber who killed whom and how it was done. Envy and a desire to steal Jewish property were significant motivations for the murders. States that hatred of the Jews is still very strong in Jedwabne, Radziłów, and other localities where similar massacres occurred. Compares the interviewees' views with documents from the postwar trials. Describes, also, a commemoration of the massacre in Jedwabne, held on 10 July 2001, in which the inhabitants of the village did not take part. The mayor of Jedwabne, one of the organizers of this commemorative event, had to resign from his position due to the residents' hostility.
