Abstract:

"Discovered by accident in 1979 in teh Petén region of Guatemala, the cave of Naj Tunich is home to the most extensive, sophisticated examples of Maya cave art known to date. In 1989, it was permanently closed to the public after a major act of vandalism. Since then the paintings and the damage done to them have been preserved in the darkness of a fragile environment. Accompanied by some of the contributors to this volume, the artist Pablo Vargas Lugo visited Naj Tunich in May 2017 with the aim of producing a video and exhibition evoking this site. This book is a result of that expedition. It brings together images, interpretations, testimonies, and narratives exploring our connection to ancient and modern rituals, the link to urban codes like graffiti, and the present day relevance of experiences that were lived in secret over a thousand years ago."--
