Abstract:

Former Secretary of State James A. Baker talks about some of the changes that have occurred since he served as the campaign manager of the Ford campaign in 1976. He points out that the Reagan challenge to Gerald Ford that year was the last closely contested national convention in the United States. Secretary Baker also suggests that closing the polls at the same time around the country in presidential elections would lessen the inappropriate influence the media exerts under the current system, in which it projects winners and losers while polling places are still open in certain parts of the country.
