Abstract:

Memoirs of a Jew (né Martin Friedmann) born in 1926 in Bánovce nad Bebravou, Slovakia. In 1942 he voluntarily entered the labor camp in Sered, while almost all of his family was deported to Auschwitz. He managed to escape from the camp and lived for a time in the monastery in Špisské Podhradí as an auxiliary worker. In 1944, he joined the partisans and took part in the Slovak Uprising. However, he encountered anti-Jewish feelings amongst the partisans and was forced to conceal his true identity. Later, he joined the Czechoslovak troops of the Red Army and was among the first to enter liberated Prague. In 1949, frustrated by the fact that many former fascists held positions in the Slovak Communist Party and in the new regime, he emigrated to Israel. Includes a list of the Jews who lived in the Bánovce nad Bebravou district in 1938, noting that only 170 of them survived the war.
