Abstract:
Seven letters with typed transcriptions written by Nellie Brown and her husband Benjamin Jones Brown from Saint Anthony (Sept. 28, 1856), Swan River (Jan. 8, 1857), Crow Wing (Apr. 26, 1858), Rosemount (Apr. 18 and 21, 1863), Mendota (Jan. 20, 1864), and Minneapolis (Aug. 1, 1865) to her sister-in-law Polly Brown in China, Maine. The letters tell about their marriage, children, health, weather, and work. The letters also express thanks for gifts sent by Polly and inquire about family members and acquaintances.
Noteworthy sections describe the attendance of Indian women at the birth of their second child, a neighbor's grief over the death of her husband, Nellie's prospects as a teacher, Indian raids during the spring of 1863 at Devils Lake and near Mankato, Benjamin's illness and his warehouse work at Fort Snelling, increased immigration into "Indian Country," and the return of soldiers to farming following the Civil War.
