Abstract:
The history of the early settlement of the Nelson Province of New Zealand begins with the days of the Maori, and goes on through the visits of Tasman, Cook and D'Urville to consider the Wakefield system of colonisation as applied in Nelson, the voyages of emigrant ships, urban and rural development, the life and struggles of the colonists, the leading personalities engaged and the exploration of the hinterland. It contains what is certainly the best account of the "Wairau massacre" yet given, and breaks new ground with a fascinating chapter on the German settlers who came to the province.
