Abstract:

The New Left pamphlet collection mainly documents the worldwide controversy and turmoil surrounding social and political issues during the 1960s and early 1970s. Subjects of national and international prominence include the injustice of war, democracy and free speech, women's rights, human rights, racial equality, and gay and lesbian liberation. There are also a substantial number of pamphlets on radical and activist issues dating from the 1890s. Political and activist figures featured in the collection include labor activist Mary "Mother" Jones, Socialist leader Michael Harrington, Senator George McGovern, and African-American leader Malcolm X. Among leftist activist groups featured in the collection are the Black Panther Party, Students for a Democratic Society, various Socialist organizations, the militant Weathermen, women's liberation groups, and peace and civil rights groups such as the American Friends Service Committee (Quaker). Publications originating at "activist" universities, notably the University of California, Berkeley, are also included, as are such left-leaning publications as The Guardian (UK) and Off Our Backs, a women's liberation tabloid.
