Abstract:

Duncan Sandys, Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations, of the British government, visited New Zealand during July 1961. "The purpose of his visit to New Zealand was to advise the government that Britain had decided that it would be in its own best future interests to join the European Economic Community. The period of his visit set the scene for the start of profound changes made within the structure of the New Zealand economy, the pace of which has accelerated within recent years. The effects of these changes are the subject of almost constant debate in this country, among parliamentary parties and the community at large. Sir Robert Muldoon is one of the very few present parliamentary members whose careers have endured since the time of Duncan Sandys' visit. He has been actively involved in the decision making process of New Zealand's economic management for most of the past 25 years, and there would be few people better qualified to present an objective economic review of that period. This book is his account of most of the major difficulties which confronted New Zealand, and how governments of the day responded to them ..." -- Inside front cover.
