Abstract:

Two similar versions of an article (2 leaves, 3 leaves; typed) about the Northwest Angle, a region in Lake of the Woods County, Minnesota, and the discovery in 1908 of the ruins of Fort St. Charles, built in 1732 by explorer and fur trader Pierre Gaultier de Varennes La Verendrye. Stees provides information on the geography of the region, the evolution of treaties incorporating this region, and its eventual transfer to the United States. Included is information on a 1940 proposal by the Minnesota Historical Society to the Minnesota Division of State Parks, Department of Conservation to acknowledge the historical significance of the fort and to create a state park at the site.
