Abstract:

Against the background of political, social, and ethnic conflicts, discusses manifestations of antisemitism at the University of Warsaw, among them an attempt to introduce a numerus clausus (and later a numerus nullus), attacks on Jewish students, beatings and throwing out of classes (which occurred especially at the beginning of every academic year). The "Aryan paragraph" meant non-acceptance of Jewish students to various student organizations. The disturbances were organized by Polish nationalistic youth, whose goal was to force the Jews to leave Poland. States that the numerus clausus was not decreed formally by the Sejm, but it existed de facto in some faculties. Because the University was extraterritorial, the police could not intervene. In 1937 the policy of "ghetto benches" (Jews sitting apart in the classroom) was introduced following pressure from right-wing youth organizations which perceived the Jews as enemies of Poland. Discusses reactions to the acts of violence by left-wing students, professors, the University administration, clergymen, and Jewish community authorities. The violence caused a decline in the number of Jewish students, many of whom went abroad to study.
