Abstract:

Abstract: Despite an extensive amount of research on the importance of utilizing culturally sensitive or competent care in healthcare, minimal research has focused on Emergency Department (ED) Registered Nurses (RNs). Most research concludes that providing culturally competent care in an ever-growing diverse patient population is essential. The purpose of this research was to evaluate whether RNs who work in a fast-paced environment provide culturally competent care. The Cultural Competence Assessment tool was used to evaluate 52 RNs in a large hospital ED in Long Beach, California. Although this study concluded that none of the results was significant when compared to a similar study done at a Michigan hospice center, additional research will be beneficial for this topic. This study is part of a growing body of research about culturally competent patient care and should contribute to future research on similar topics.
