Slow-paced but engaging

This novel is about a girl searching for a "normal" family---only to find out that family is what you make of it.  It is a bit slow-paced and repetitive in its setting and motifs, but the main character is well developed.  Read from an adult perspective, you will feel some anger at the adults...
