Abstract:

Henry Dillon entered the field of photoengraving in 1937 with little or no knowledge of the trade. He apprenticed in a photoengraving shop in Chicago. During World War II, Dillon served in the Air Force, returning to complete his apprenticeship in Chicago in 1946. His activities with the union began with Local No. 5 of the International Photo Engravers' Union (IPEU) in Chicago. He talks about the Chicago Federation of Labor and Industrial Union Council, and what he considers its weaknesses. He discusses the Wisconsin School for Workers in Industry which he attended in the summer of 1952. Immediately after the Workers School he became a staff representative for IPEU and was involved in organizing. He describes the organizing efforts in the Chicago area during that time; he reflects on the jurisdictional disputes with the International Typographical Union and he discusses the merger in 1964 with the Amalgamated Lithographers of America and some of the problems present in the merging of these two unions.
