Abstract:

Abstract: This study investigated whether orthography plays a role in the adaptation of loanwords from Spanish into English. Additionally, the effects of exposure to the Spanish language were probed. Forty-eight participants were divided into 2 groups (Beginner and Advanced) based on the amount of exposure they had had to the Spanish language. These groups were then further subdivided into three conditions (audio, audiovisual and visual). They were shown 84 nonce words and asked to repeat them in sentences. The results of the experiment demonstrated that though orthography plays a role in the adaptation of loanwords, there is also a perceptual factor that needs to be considered. Additionally, this study found that increased exposure to the Spanish language decreases one's reliance on orthography during the adaptation process.
