Abstract:

Chs. 1-4 (pp. 7-33) deal with the role of antisemitism in the ideology and policies of Nazi Germany. Discusses conflicting approaches of historians on the question of to what extent the Final Solution was an integral and well-planned part of the strategy of Hitler and the Nazi central command. Ch. 5 (pp. 34-53) outlines the Nazi anti-Jewish policies in the Protectorate and the establishment of the Theresienstadt ghetto. The rest of the book (pp. 54-156) relates the history of the Theresienstadt ghetto from the beginning of 1942 until the last deportations in October 1944, with special attention paid to the visit of the International Red Cross delegation on 23 July 1944 (pp. 92-147). Relates, also, to newly discovered documents, offering new interpretations of various topics. Pp. 161-223 contain endnotes, a bibliography, and an index.
