Abstract:

"In 1946 Michael Howard, aged 19, was sent into the British zone of occupied Germany as part of Target ('T') Force, the special army unit whose task was to ransack the entire Nazi military-industrial complex, removing all technology and intellectual property -- and sometimes people -- of value to the occupying power. During his 22-month stay, Howard wrote 67 letters home to his parents. Remarkable for their perception and for their sympathy towards the plight of ordinary Germans, these unique documents, linked and reinforced by the somewhat more risqué reminiscences of the older man, form the text of Otherwise Occupied. It was an extraordinary experience. The author was soon put in charge of the intelligence function throughout a whole region that included the devastated Ruhr, work that brought him into direct conflict both with resentful ex-Nazis and with the Russians -- erstwhile allies; now Cold War rivals -- who made regular incursions into the British zone in search of the spoils of war. Meanwhile, he fell in love for the first time, with Margret, the daughter of the German doctor in whose house he was billeted."--Publisher's description.
