Abstract:

With multiple critically-acclaimed symphonic cycles already under their collective belt, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and its artistic director Paavo Järvi follow up their 2009 Beethoven cycle and 2011 Schumann cycle with a Brahms cycle! Paavo Järvi and The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen in Brahms's charming Second. Written in the bucolic setting of a countryside retreat and premiered in 1877 by the Vienna Philharmonic, Brahms's Symphony No. 2 seems to have imbibed the country air, inviting many comparisons to Beethoven's own "Pastoral" Sixth Symphony. It also stands in stark contrast to the First, which took Brahms years to write: the composer finished the Second Symphony in a single summer! Brimming with beautiful themes that seem to roll along easily from one to another, the work has become a true audience favorite among the oeuvre of one of the most beloved classical composers.
