Abstract:

For forty years, there has been little talk of autobiography without mentioning the "autobiographical pact". But do we know how this idea has evolved between its first formulation in Autobiography in France (1971) and Signs of Life(2005)? This book is devoted to the fortunes of Philippe Lejeune's most quoted study, "The Autobiographical Pact" (1973), reproduced in its entirety and followed by an analysis of the debates it sparked between its author and writers ( S. Doubrovsky, A. Robbe-Grillet) or other theorists (P. de Man, G. Genette, G. Gusdorf, etc.). The astonishing role of the "Autobiographical Pact" in the genesis of autofiction has been extensively discussed. This is not, however, the only impact of a study that has also paved the way for a pragmatic conception of the literary genre and represents, in the full reign of the Text, an effort to think about the referentiality of literature.--Honoré Champion.
