Abstract:
Papaya, Carica papaya L., is a small tree which belongs to the Caricaceae family and is originated from South America. A small wound of this tree causes latex secretion which contains enzymes such as papaïn, chymopapaïne, chitinase, lipase... These enzymes are responsible for the medicinal properties of this tree. That is why this plant has been used for a long time in traditional medicine. Nowadays, papaya is used in homeopathy and phytotherapy to treat dispeptic disorders and to favour weightloss. This plant has an original utilisation : cheminucleolysis which uses chymopapaïne to treat discal vertebral diseases. Today some works are being led to demonstrate the traditional indications of this tree as, for example, its anthelmintic properties, anti-ulcer properties and its efficacy on wounds.
