Abstract:

Correspondence, records, deeds, papers.

This collection consists of 193 photocopied papers dating from 1766 to 1782. Some of the materials deal with the creation of the English-speaking Cape Florida Society as a political gamble to intervene in the political map of Florida's pre-Revolutionary war, seeking to remove the Spanish influence in the area. There is also a series of correspondence to and from the Earl of Dartmouth, which show the support for a back door to the colonies. The trade agent for the Spanish was Leslie and Company, an English company from London, but headquartered in West Indies due to the war with Spain. The materials discuss the Indian trade as bringing revenue, but the slave trade was the major conflict for English-Spanish political movement. The letters detail personal accounts and responsibilities of Lord Dartmouth in his duties in the Americas, containing correspondence between he and his officer, Lord John Gerar William DeBrahm.

The collection also contains information on Florida, dating 1772. It is an account of its history, climate, inhabitants, geography, etc. There are photocopies of DeBrahm's record of East Florida given to the Lord of Dartmouth.
