Abstract:

The collection consists of approximately 1,500 items (8 boxes). There are three major series: Correspondence, Legal Documents, and Financial Documents. In addition there are five much smaller series: Printed Material; Minutes, Proceedings, etc; Maps, Diagarams and Lists; Literary Productions; and Miscellany. The earliest documents date from 1767-68 and the latest from 1830, but the majority pertain to the 1780's and 1790s.

The major subject areas of the collection are politics, militia, commercial activity, and land. However the range of subjects include in the collection, especially in the correspondence, demonstrates the wide interests and variety of activities of an educated Eighteenth Century man. John Williams, in addition to his personal activities as a doctor, merchant, land owner, politician and military leader, corresponded with other gentlemen on the subjects of philosophy, friendship, Masonic organization, and religion. He was appealed to by constituents, tenants, and neighbors for assistance with legal problems, military pensions, news from other places, routes for post roads and locations for post offices.

Because of the organization of the collection by document type, researchers interested in a particular subject will need to check all series for those sections which are relevant. For example, Military documents appear in Correspondence, Legal Documents II-B, Financial Documents III-6, Minutes and Proceedings, Lists, and Literary.
