Author: Charles F Kindred
Edition/Format:   Archival material : English
Summary:
Kindred's papers document both his railroad and political careers, as well as domestic accounts and affairs.

The real estate and financial papers include deeds, mortgages, bonds, and bank statements.

The correspondence (1890-1914) is primarily concerned with political patronage. There are many requests to Kindred for positions as school teachers, school principals, constables, clerks, detectives, physicians, postal workers, yard men, office workers, etc. There are letters and telegrams from Sen. M. S. Quay and a letter from Governor William A. Stone, as well as numerous letters from minor party officials and office holders. In addition to the political correspondence, these are letters relating to Kindred's personal real estate dealings, law suits, Union League membership, etc.

The political material includes ward maps, pocket books containing ward and voter lists, and lists of office holders.

The railroad material includes some correspondence (1890-1898), a time book (1897-1900), a notebook of general railroad information (1888), manuscript annual statements and reports, and a list of railroad bridges in Philadelphia.

The miscellaneous material includes insurance policies, law suit memoranda, correspondence regarding the death of Kindred's wife and the auction of her effects, school reports for Kindred's children and scattered Philadelphia government publications.  Read more...
