Summary:
The records consist of a small collection of material preserved by descendants of Joseph Whitaker at Mont Clare. There are 8 volumes and 52 loose manuscript items.

There is a single day book (1848-1853) covering the operation of the Durham Iron Works, including farm, coal, lumber and ore accounts.

The remaining account books cover the operation of Whitaker's Mont Clare farm and his private expenses (1836-1871) and the sawmill, lumber and coal yard of Davis & Whitaker (1846-1859). There is also a small private receipt book of Joseph Whitaker (1829-1870). These include accounts for the building of the Mont Clare estate. One book contains an 1848 toll schedule for the Schuylkill Canal.

The remaining loose documents are a miscellany covering many aspects of Whitaker's career, primarily copies of deeds, mortgages and partnership agreements. There is also a printed memoir of Joseph Whitaker, his father and his eldest son, Joseph Rusling Whitaker. There are statements and bills of Whitaker & Coudon re iron sold on behalf of the various Whitaker furnaces and rolling mills, statements and agreements regarding the Whitakers' interest in the Crescent Manufacturing Company, domestic bills and tax papers.  Read more...
