Abstract:

This collection contains the papers of Alexander Marx, the librarian of the Jewish Theological Seminary Library and professor of history, from the late 1800s to his death in 1953. The collection documents his intertwined personal and professional life, through correspondence, teaching materials, library reports, photographs, articles, lectures, book reviews, notes, and other writings. The collection focuses on his interactions with scholars outside of and within the Jewish Theological Seminary, and documents his interest in Jewish medieval history and literature and the discussion and trends within the scholarly community at the time. The collection also has a focus on the Jewish rare book trade and how Marx's acquisitions and advocation bolstered the JTS library collections.
