Abstract:

The collection contains the Griscom family papers from 1896 to 1977. It includes financial records, legal documents, contracts, wills, deeds, photographs, newspaper clippings, manuscripts, scrapbooks, plantation guest books, and memorabilia. The bulk of the materials are the papers of Lloyd Carpenter Griscom, Audrey Crosse Griscom, and Frances C. Griscom. The business records deal primarily with Luna Plantation and Water Oak Plantation.

The collection contains correspondence between the Griscom family and several notable persons. Some of the correspondents of Lloyd Carpenter Griscom were President James Monroe, 1840; General Pershing, 1919; Rudyard Kipling; Henry Adams; Richard Harding Davis; James Bryce; Edward, Duke of Windsor; President Theodore Roosevelt, 1905-1908; and President Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1937-1942. The correspondents of Frances C. Griscom included Mamie Eisenhower, 1970, and President Richard Nixon, 1953-1961.
