Abstract:

Correspondence and memoranda, diaries and diary notes (1936-1961), speeches and writings, drafts, notebooks, research files, political campaign files, family and estate papers, financial and legal papers, printed material, and photos, relating to Martin's activities as a free-lance journalist specializing in crime stories and in articles (many later expanded and published as books) on social problems such as labor and prison reform, racial segregation, juvenile delinquency, and mental illness; his role as political adviser to Democratic presidential candidates (1952-1972) and especially Adlai Stevenson; his appointment by John F. Kennedy and subsequent service as ambassador to the Dominican Republic; and his authorship of a biography of Adlai Stevenson (1976-1977) and an account of his experiences in the Dominican Republic, Overtaken by Events (1966).
