Abstract:
The 5.5 linear feet of the Constance Baker Motley Papers, dating from 1948 to 19 88, are primarily professional, documenting her career from 1948. The bulk of the papers date from the mid-1960s on and consist of correspondence with friends, colleagues and constituents. Other material includes speeches; biographical articles; interviews; legal documents; photographs and memorabilia. While there is considerable published material, retrospective speeches and interviews documenting Motley's career as a civil rights lawyer, the primary sources in the collection focus on her later career as a state senator, borough president, and federal judge. Beyond the story of one remarkable individual, the papers shed light on the successes and failures of programs that emerged from the public policy applications of civil rights in such areas as the war on poverty and race discrimination; urban renewal; and in the New York State courts and political systems. Notable individuals represented in the papers include Bella Abzug, Shirley Chisolm, Jack Greenburg, Hubert Humphrey, Lyndon B. Johnson, Florynce Kennedy, Dorothy Kenyon, Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, James Meredith, A. Philip Randolph, and NYC Mayors John Lindsay and Robert Wagner.
