Abstract:

The papers contain the autograph manuscripts for the story "The great corner in Hannibal and St. Jo," and the poem "To the Erie"; autograph manuscript fragments from "McTeague" and "The octopus"; and eighteen letters re his writing, particularly the stories "From dawn to dark - fighting" and "Surrender" and the novels "Blix," "The heroine," "McTeague," "A man's woman," "Moran of the Lady Letty," "The octopus," "The pit," "The squid," and "Vandover and the brute." Discusses English publication and critical success, serialization, syndication, royalties, cover design, sub-titles, suggestions for printers, revision of stories for "Everybody's" magazine and possibility of selling rights to the Century Company; requests payment; and mentions ideas for a series of novels based on the subject of North American wheat. Other letters deal with some of Norris's manuscripts and possibility of publishing a collection of his short stories.

There are also a pen and ink drawing by Norris and nine photographs: one of Norris sitting in his study, and eight of a Norris exhibit at the Bancroft Library.

Correspondents include Mr. and Mrs. Easton Ashe, Mr. Daniels, John O'Hara Cosgrave, Benjamin Orange Flower, Lewis Edwards Gates, Jeannette Black Norris, Paul Reynolds, (Franklin Thomas) Grant Richards, Elizabeth Sutton, and Robert L. Yard.
