Abstract:

Papers of the Buxton, Lea, and Marshall families of Pennsylvania and Virginia, contain personal and business correspondence, diaries, journals, ledgers, notebooks and guestbooks, photographs and photograph albums, postcards, newspaper clippings and portraits.

Correspondence is primarily that of Dr. Harry Taylor Marshall and Nancy Lea Marshall of Albemarle County, Va.; Joseph Tatnall Lea of Philadelphia, Pa.; the Cabeen family of Germantown, Pa.; and the Buxton family of Newport News, Va.

Cabeen family correspondence, 1859, consists of letters between Annie Cabeen and her family while she is touring the Southern States.

Courtship letters between Joseph Tatnall Lea and Annie Cabeen were written during his Civil War service in the 114th Regiment Pennsylvania volunteers. Civil War topics in these mostly personal letters include the Germantown Cornet Band; the battles of Auburn (Bristoe Station), Chancellorsville, Kelly's Ford, and [Mine Run?]; camp life; deaths of friends; execution of deserters; capture by Confederates and escape; his position as Brigade Headquarters Aide for Régis de Trobriand; the draft; African-American soldiers; capture of sutlers by Mosby; incompetence of commanders; maurauding troops, a French cook at headquarters, and his family's efforts to have him discharged. Letters after his discharge discuss war news, business trips, and the family dry goods business. A letter from D.P. Heap mentions soldiers at Petersburg celebrating the capture of Atlanta.

People mentioned include David Bell Birney, John Minor Botts, Charles H.T. Collis, Régis de Trobriand, William Henry French, George Meade, Daniel E. Sickles and Edwin M. Stanton.

Correspondence of Nancy Lea Marshall discusses travels including a world cruise on the U.S.S. Resolute, the University of Virginia hospital, the settlement of the A.C. Lea estate, Preston Heights in Charlottesville, family news and life at Bloomfield.

Papers of Dr. Harry Taylor Marshall discuss the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey of Maine and Massachusetts, 1892-1894; his medical research in Germany and the United States including an investigation of "locoweed disease" in sheep; and his faculty position and research in the Dept. of Medicine, U. Va. There are also comments on national events including the assassination of McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt's lunch for Booker T. Washington, and the "disenfranchising of the Negro" in Maryland, 1901. Ben Howell Griswold, Jr., who writes on the Baltimore social scene and Maryland politics is a frequent correspondent.

Correspondence of Snowden Marshall include several letters describing post-war conditions and economic hardships in Berlin, 1947.

Correspondence of William Dimmock Buxton includes letters from family and friends while a student at the University of Virginia including college friends serving in World War II.

The collection also contains family photograph albums and cartes-de-visite of family, friends and noted personalities of the day.
