Spilman's correspondence files from 1953-57 & 69-70, of personal, routine business and political letters constitute the bulk of the collection. There is assorted material from a variety of civic, religious and business organizations with which Spilman was associated including the Methodist Committee for Overseas Relief, the Virginia Press Association, the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association, the American Council on Education for Journalism, Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Ind., Ferrum Junior College, Ferrum, Va., and the Virginia Governor's Study Commission on Vocational Rehabilitation, 1967. Topics of interest include the Bikini Atom Bomb Test, 1946, Alaskan statehood, Virginia massive resistence, the Ellee portable ink fountain, and the purchase of the Glasgow Daily Times, Glasgow, Ky.

Among the correspondents are Harry Flood Byrd, Mills Edwin Godwin, Ernest Gruening, John O. Marsh, Francis Pickens Miller, and James Kenneth Robinson.
