Abstract:

The collection contains several signed documents, including ships papers, a passport, a land grant, and an appropriation bill. The land grant is countersigned by James Madison.

Correspondence includes letters to Thomas Pinckney on the coining and engraving of U.S. money; letters to Caesar A. Rodney, on a suit against "Aurora" editor William Duane; a letter and document to St. George Tucker on trade with Bermuda during the Revolution, and a letter on the Santo Domingo revolt and concern over U.S. slave revolts; and correspondence with William Wirt on Patrick Henry.

There are also single letters to Colonel Francis Taylor on Army commissions; to General Robert Lawson on destination of British ships and Cornwallis's expected move on Camden; to Thomas Read on an expected invasion of Virginia by British troops; to Nicholas Lewis on Albemarle County land and the hiring of slaves (mentions Great George, Ursula, Betty Hemings, Martin and Bob); to Nathaniel Macon on Repbulicans as Commissioners of Bankruptcy; to the U.S. Senate on Indian treaties; to Robert Patterson on the U.S. mint; and to Mr. Cardell on membersthip in the American Academy of Language and Belles Lettres.
