Abstract:

The digitization by ATILF (Analyse et Traitement Informatique de la Langue Française: Analysis and computer processing of the French language) of J.B. Pontalis's literary essays on the FRANTEXT database has enabled to calculate the relative and absolute frequencies resulting in the selection of 22 words, so called "junction words", which are representative of the writer's poetics. Each lexical monograph is seen from different viewpoints referring to the various domains this "polymorphous" writer favours. As the author clearly shows, what is primarily at issue in his poetics is the wish to account for speech defined by psychoanalysis as "a meeting with a stranger", the stranger within oneself, through literary writing. Faced with this challenge, Pontalis places the word between two logics - the concept and the metaphor - thus paving the way for a new approach to literature. The author in search of an identity attempts to create a metaspeech where phenomenology, psychoanalysis and lexicology are intertwined, while he implicitly remembers his experience as an editor of the Vocabulaire de la psychanalyse, followed by the work on Freudian notions through the Nouvelle revue de psychanalyse which uses the T.L.F. (Trésor de la Langue française) as a first basis for its work, guaranteeing a permanent return to what Pontalis calls "ordinary language". My research is made of three parts, each studying one of the following complexes: Mnemosyne, Narcissus and Hermes. Its ultimate goal is, beyond the pre-eminence of the speech defining the various origins, what is beyond the language, where the transcendency of the metaphor is confronted with the attractive strength of the myth.
