Abstract:

Abstract: The objective of the study is to examine various patient satisfaction indicators of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of four acute-care hospitals, and to see which of these factors were associated with patient satisfaction. A retrospective secondary data analysis was conducted from surveys that were administered in 2011 to the family members of the recently deceased patients who were treated in the ICU. It was hypothesized that effective communication between physicians and patients would predict patient satisfaction. Providing timely medication and personal care needs, as well as communication were significant factors in overall satisfaction. For communication indicators empathy and respect, and making sure that the family was kept up to date and educated about the current conditions of the patient were highly correlated. Having family involvement in decision medication and treatment goals was not significant in overall patient satisfaction. This may be due to any advanced directives that may have been already in place prior to patient stay at the ICU.
