Abstract:

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to determine whether primary payer type effects the utilization and outcome for sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. Utilization in this study is measured by length of stay and total charges, while outcome is measured by in hospital mortality. After performing statistical analyses, the results indicate that primary payer type has some effect on utilization and outcome for SCD patients. However, patient acuity plays a greater role in determining utilization and outcome. This finding is consistent with what other researchers have found. Additional findings indicate that SCD patients with the primary payer type of Medicare have utilization which is significantly different from the rest of the population. Further research should be done to evaluate the care of SCD patients with Medicare as their primary payer.
