Abstract:

For at least the past century, scholars have studied the Kurdish language. Recently, with the political and cultural problems in the Middle East, interest in the Kurdish language and culture has increased. In the realm of linguistics, Kurdish is considered interesting due to the vast cross linguistic area that the language envelops, in addition, the linguistic repression Kurds have faced over the years. Academic scholars have placed this wide-ranging language within the Indo-Iranian family. The purposes of this thesis are to provide an updated analysis of two major dialect groups (Kermanci and Sorani), to investigate the sociolinguistic issues facing the Kurdish population within the Middle East, and to provide insight into the future of the Kurdish language, particularly where the language will go and what will become of it due to the existing geopolitical and geolinguistic barriers.
