Beginning with Ed Sullivan's Toast of the Town and Milton Berle's Texaco Star Theater, this exploration of early variety TV progresses through The Carol Burnett Show, The Smothers Brothers, and Laugh-In, among others. Tim Conway and Jonathan Winters share their variety-show memories, Tommy Smothers reflects on his own landmark show, Pat Boone discusses the racist policies that hampered his ability to book African-American guests, and Tony Orlando reveals the backstory behind his role as the first Hispanic host of a variety series. Additionally, Arsenio Hall talks about his admiration of Flip Wilson's genius. Part of the series Pioneers of Television.
