Abstract:

Disc 1. Otoshiana (The Pitfall), 1962 : Based on the experimental fiction of postwar novelist Kobo Abe, Otoshiana is a social critique set in the post-war mining communities of western Japan. A homeless miner, following a tip for some good work, is pursued and killed by a man clothed entirely in white. A woman in the deserted nearby village witnesses the murder, and is bullied by the murderer into giving false testimony to the police. Mistrust spreads throughout the mining community and more deaths follow. The ghosts of killed characters rise from the ground and follow the play of the action, like vocal audience members, unable to address the living but imploring them just the same to answer the question, 'Why was I killed? What was it for? Where was the meaning in my life?'

Disc 2. Suna no onna (Woman in the Dunes), 1964 : Jumpei Niki, a salary man and hobby entomologist. One weekend he leaves for a collecting trip near the ocean out in the sand dunes. After traipsing around the beach all day, he inquires about busses or lodgings back near the highway to local townsmen. The townspeople tell him that it is too late to make it back to the highway, but suggest that he stays in the town for the night - and lead him to a woman 's house which is sunk into a pit below the dunes and is only accessible by rope ladder lowered from above. Initially grateful for the interesting place to stay, he soon realizes that he has been tricked by the townspeople and is expected to stay indefinitely in the pit, condemned to shovelling the ever-encroaching sand in a daily struggle to preserve the house and by extension, the town.

Disc 3. Tanin no kao (The Face of Another), 1966 : A chemist, Mr. Okuyama, has had an accident while examining a new industrial plant and suffers hideous facial keloid scars following the explosion. Forced to wear bandages around his head all the time, he feels himself slipping into a depression and losing connection with the world around him - most notably his wife who refuses his advances - and so he turns to a psychiatrist to help him create a mask which will allow him reconnect with society by leading a second life and seducing his wife. The doctor considers it unethical, but agrees nonetheless. Meanwhile, a volunteer nurse at a psychiatric hospital who suffered scars on one half of her face in the war is trying to deal with her life without covering up her scars.

Disc 4. The supplements : The ground breaking collaboration between Hiroshi Teshigahara and writer Kobo Abe is examined in the new documentary Teshigahara and Abe, which includes exclusive video interviews with film programmer and professor Richard Pena, Japanese-film scholars Donald Richie and Tadao Sato, set designer Arata Isozaki, screen writer John Nathan, and producer Noriko Nomura. Also included on this supplemental disc are four short films from the director's early career: Hokusai (1953), Ikebana(1956), Tokyo 1958 (1958), and Ako (1965).
