Abstract:

The historic visit of Pope John Paul II to the only Communist state in the Western Hemisphere is an event fraught with irony and déjà vu. Hoping to emulate his visit to Poland - which led, in part, to the dismantling of Communism in the Soviet Bloc - the Pope meets with one of the last apostles of Communism. Although each has a common enemy in Western materialism and similar commitments to ideals, Fidel Castro and Pope John Paul II are indeed strange bedfellows. Their meeting is the occasion for examining the legacy of each of these extraordinary political and ideological leaders.
